Christian Martinelli (1970–2022) was an Italian photographer and self-taught artist from Merano. Since the late 1990s, he worked as a photo reporter in Eastern Europe, South America, and Haiti, while simultaneously developing international artistic projects. Together with Andrea Pizzini and Andrea Salvà, he realized the experimental photography project Cube, a walk-in large-format camera producing direct positives. In 2014, he co-founded the 00A Gallery together with Andrea Salvà. In 2023, Kunst Meran Merano Arte dedicated the retrospective Incontrare Christian Martinelli to his work.
Martinelli’s artistic practice moved between documentary and experimental photography, exploring themes of memory, vulnerability, and the relationship between humans and nature. Many of his series were developed over long periods of time and are characterized by a strong personal connection to people and places. Central to his work was analogue photography and the construction of self-developed photographic devices. Among his best-known projects are the long-term series Stories and the body of work Confini, created with the large-format camera Cube along the Italian coastlines.
